992/131J - RARE HANDCRAFTS MANUAL WINDING Pocket watch with back in miniature painting on enamel. The Grand Feu miniature painting on enamel adorning this unique piece conveys all the poetry of the painting “Quiet Day on the Seine” (1880) by the American artist Julius LeBlanc Stewart. Working on two base layers of white enamel, the enameler built up his picture in small deft touches, using a palette of 14 enamel colors blended and layered to obtain the most delicate hues. He then applied five coats of flux, or transparent enamel. This traditional finish, particular to what is known as “Geneva enameling” protects the painting and intensifies its brilliance. In all, the picture required 15 firings at a temperature of 800°C. The dial in white enamel over yellow gold presents yellow-gold applied Breguet numerals and yellow-gold hands. A green tourmaline cabochon (0.31 ct) decorates the crown. This pocket watch is accompanied by a yellow-gold handcrafted stand on an oval-shaped base in spangled white marble. It houses the caliber 17’’’ LEP PS manually wound movement with small seconds.
